Prof. Dr. BELKIS (ANTEL) ÖZDOĞAN
1912
She was born in Istanbul. She was home-schooled with private tutors and completed her elementary education. She went to Çamlıca All Girls' Secondary School and then to Istanbul Kandilli All Girls' High School as a boarding student.
1938
She had seen Atatürk a couple of time before and waved at him, and he waved at her in return...She went to his funeral of whom she loved with all of her heart at Sirkeci Train Station and then took the train to Ankara with a friend.
1939
She enrolled in the Physics Department of Istanbul University. However, her parents found this out and made her disenroll. When a group of professors of the university came to her house and insisted that she should go to the university, her parents reluctantly let her go.
1940
She married to Ahmet Ihsan Özdoğan, one of the assistant professors in the Department of Physics of Istanbul University. Their son, Prof Dr. Mehmet Özdoğan would follow the academic footsteps of his parents.
1943
She worked as a physics teacher in Istanbul Çapa Teacher Training College for one year.
1944
She was appointed as an assistant to Prof. Dr. Harry Dember in the Empirical Physics Division of Physics Department of Istanbul University. 1949 She earned her doctorate in physics (PhD).
1949
She became a doctor of science.
1952
She conducted research for nine months in the optics laboratory of Sorbonne University. After she returned to Türkiye, she became an associate professor in Istanbul University.
1964
She worked as a lecturer in Chemical Engineering Department of Galatasaray College founded to train chemical engineers.
1970
She earned the title of Professor. She wrote a book called Methods of Physics in Chemistry.
1982
She retired due to the default retirement age set by law. She concentrated more on social activities for which she could not find time while working. She had a natural gift for drawing. She was interested in mountaineering since her childhood, she liked to ski and swim.
2002
Belkıs Özdoğan who raised many students as a female pioneer in building the modern education system in Turkey died. Her family continues her legacy...
